Compass - Duty of Care

The current economic times are challenging for any industry related to or requiring facilities maintenance. Unfortunately maintenance is often one of the first areas to suffer cutbacks. This can be either the day-to-day maintenance budget of a business or the level of service provided by contractors. It is also unfortunate that the decisions where the cutbacks will occur are not made by maintenance professionals. A wrong decision can lead to a degradation in health and safety for either contractors or employees and a much higher risk of plant failure.

In the short term a cost saving initiative will not have long term effects, however, reliability will soon start to decline. There will be no long term advantage and soon financial losses, due to low reliability resulting from the cuts in maintenance spending, will exceed the original savings envisaged. This can also have disasterous effects as seen in Ireland during 2011, which involved serious injuries and loss of life.

More important, as we have seen on many sites, people's lives have been put at serious risk and the environment damaged from chemical release and excessive fuel usage. This is not acceptable behavior just to gain a short term financial benefit. Using our software solutions will promote interdisciplinary collaboration among those who work in facilities maintenance to protect and serve both workers and the environment.

A reputation for integrity is one of the most important assets any individual or company can possess - but it can be destroyed by a single unethical or thoughtless act. That's why each and every one of us must make a commitment apply a duty of care for all who are involved in or interact with our organisations. Doing so will enhance our reputation and assure us of each others trust.

  • Be environmentally responsible.
  • Treat contractors and other maintenance workers with respect.
  • Deal honestly with government inspectors.
  • Keep honest books and records.
A Contractor should...

  • Perform their duties in an honest and timely manner.
  • Never trade on inside information.
  • Give customers complete business loyalty.
  • Respect the environment.
  • Strive to serve the needs of the customer not your own.
